How Long Does a Ring Battery Last?

According to Ring, it must last 6 months to 12 months. But, what people in real life are experiencing is like, “A few days” or “A few weeks.” Ring Doorbell has to come across a lot of traffic every day which force it to be turned on and off again and again counting event every time.

Temperature and weather affect it much. In my case, it lasted only 51 days until it was at the 30 mark. But, here the weather is below 0 degrees Celsius. But, Two months or less than it is surely too little.

What factors are involved in draining Battery | Why Does My Ring Doorbell Die So Fast?

A) Number of Events

  • Ring Video Doorbell uses a motion sensor that is triggered whenever any motion is detected and lasts until the motion stops. So, it counts as one event.
  • If your doorbell is facing toward the street or roadside, it might be turned on whenever a car passes or a passenger passes by. Its AI is not that advanced to stop turning on with the detection of traffic movement. So, unnecessary turning on activation increases its events.
  • Speaking through the Doorbell and opening Live View to see the video also increase the number of Events that consumes the battery power and reduces its Life.
  • When someone presses on the doorbell, it also counts as an event.

Note: According to Ring, 6-12 months of battery life is only an estimate and It lasts up to 800-1000 events. In my case, I was getting 15 events per day. It also depends on event recording time which may vary for different doorbells.

What is an Event?

Anything which would make the doorbell activated is classified as an Event.

  • Button Push
  • Motion
  • Live View

B) Temperature

I)High Temperature

In high temperatures, the battery may seem to shut down too often due to more exposure to direct Sunlight.

II)Low Temperature

If there is too low a temperature, your Ring Doorbell Battery may not seem to charge easily and requires more charging cycles in a year when there is a temperature below the freezing point.

  • At 36℉, the battery doesn’t hold charge efficiently resulting in the battery needing to be charged more frequently.
  • At 32℉, the hardware doesn’t seem to charge the battery even in a hardwire configuration situation.
  • At -5℉, the battery might stop working completely.

C) Internet Connection

Ring Video Doorbell has to upload videos on daily basis to the cloud system or any other storage which works well with a strong internet connection. But, if there is a weak internet connection, Doorbell really seems to put a lot of effort which reduces the battery power and decreases its Life.

How to Improve Ring Doorbell Battery Life

A) Change Settings through App

In your Ring app, change the Event settings and it will help you to adjust the wake-up activity for when an Event is triggered.

  • We Don’t want our doorbell camera recording events of rustling leaves or cars driving down the street. It must record an Event when a person approaches our main door.
  • We want our doorbell camera to record the Event when people approach the doorbell.
  • We can also use Activity Zones which tell the camera which areas to focus on and which areas to ignore. This will be useful when your doorbell overlooks a busy street.
  • We can have the camera ignore the cars racing down the street which will save unnecessary Events.

B) Adjust Video Quality

We also have the option to adjust the video quality and the length of the recorded video clip. Having low-quality and shorter videos helps to conserve battery.

C) Disable Live View

If you do have no special use for this feature, you must keep it disabled. But, if you want to use “Live View”, you can use a separate battery or consider using wired Doorbell instead which will keep you away from the battery and charging hesitation.

D) Change Doorbell Position

Bring the device inside at a moderate temperature when there is a colder temperature outside.

E) Turn off Linked Devices

You may have a linked device that is communicating and sending, receiving commands. That is telling your Front Video Doorbell to record Events. If you have a floodlight camera in the backyard, it may be telling your front doorbell to record when it detects motion in the back.

You should immediately turn off the linkage and allow the doorbell camera to record the Event when it’s necessary.

F) Motion Frequency

It means that Events are not triggered too often in a shorter time period. You must adjust its motion frequency to reduce the number of events. It will surely extend your battery life but you may miss important events.

G) Motion Distance

Video Doorbells can detect motion up to 30 feet or maybe a little higher. You must reduce it to 10-15 feet which would extend the battery life as it may not record unnecessary objects far from our house.

H) Provide Cover For The Device

You must add some cover to your battery which may eliminate the effects of temperature and direct sunlight. You can try fixing a piece of wood or plastic that reduces the effect of direct light. It will also keep your device safe from rain and snow falling on doorbells.

I) Keep Doorbell charged in Low Temperature

Keep it fully charged at all times by bringing it charging and putting it back again almost on a daily basis when the temperature is below zero.

Important Troubleshooting Tips

In some places, If you find rustling leaves that continue to trigger our Events, you can change the height of the camera.

If you are facing an internet connection error, you might need to bring the router close to your doorbell or use a Wi-Fi extender.

Note: Soon Doorbell companies are working to introduce wireless charging which will be a big blow in this industry and users will find it pretty helpful.
